Gamma Phi Beta took the top spot in Homecoming sweepstakes for the second consecutive year.
Samantha Erickson, religious education junior and member of Gamma Phi Beta, was shocked to hear her organization had won.
“It felt wonderful,” Erickson said. “It felt good to have our hard work pay off.”
Eight organizations competed this past week in Homecoming festivities.
The organizations that competed were Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Phi Mu,
Lambda Chi Alpha, Kappa Sigma, FIJI, and Kappa Phi/DAX.
The organizations competed in four categories that made up the sweepstakes competition: banner, window, spirit structure, and lip sync.
Organizations also competed in a spirit competition.
Phi Mu, OCU’s newest Greek organization, only competed in the categories of window and lip sync.
The spirit competition was judged based on overall spirit, plus the amount of participation in homecoming kick-off and the basketball game. The winner was awarded $500.
Lauran Dewey, acting junior and member of Gamma Phi Beta, said the win was overwhelming.
“I was so proud of the work my sisters had put into it, “Dewey said. “I am proud of every organization that competed.”
The competition concluded on Saturday at the OCU vs. Champion Baptist basketball game. The Stars won 88-46.
Homecoming royalty was announced at halftime.
Julia Devine, acting senior and Gamma Phi Beta’s representative, was crowned Homecoming Queen.
“I am so humbled by all the love and support shown this week,” Devine said.
Tim Johnson, dance performance senior and member of Kappa Sigma, was crowned Homecoming King.
“I am very happy and excited,” Johnson said. “At this moment I am still very shocked but also very, very honored to be nominated.”
In addition to Homecoming King and Queen, winners of banner, window, spirit structure, lip sync, overall spirit, and sweepstakes were announced after the game concluded.
Each category of the sweepstakes competition had 300 total possible points, 60 points per judge.
To determine the sweepstakes winners, the score for each category was multiplied by the percentage the category was worth and then added together.
Banner was worth 15 percent, window was worth 15 percent, spirit structure was worth 35 percent and lip sync was worth 35 percent.
Sweepstakes prizes were awarded to the organization with the most points.
First place received $500, second place received $350 and third place received $250.
In addition to the sweepstakes prizes, prizes also were awarded to the first place winner of each category.
Window received $75, banner received $75, spirit structure received $175, and lip sync received $175.
