Power of Purple Week, a fundraising program for Relay For Life, is coming to campus next week.
Relay For Life is an international organization that supports cancer research.
The goal of the week is to start raising money for Relay earlier in the year.
“Everyone on this campus has been affected by cancer in some way,” said Allison Bevers, religion senior and chairwoman of this year’s Relay event.
“They’ve lost someone, they’ve watched someone go through that fight, and so all of us are connected by that.”
The fundraising week will begin Monday with a percentage night at Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, 600 N.W. 23rd St.
Orange Leaf will donate 15 percent of the proceeds from each purchase to the team of any customer who says they are with Relay For Life.
There will be a bake-off Tuesday. Each participating team will donate baked goods to be sold in front of the caf.
Proceeds from each team’s baked goods will go to their individual fundraising goal.
Nov. 13 will be solely focused on raising awareness. The advocacy night will communicate the purpose behind Relay For Life and promote hope for those affected by cancer.
Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, 208 Johnny Bench Drive in Bricktown, will host a percentage night in conjunction with Free Movie Night on Nov. 14.
The committee will host a celebration event for all the teams Nov. 15. The winning team will have dinner with cancer survivors at Relay in the spring.
“We’re trying to do more things throughout the year, because a lot of people think it’s just the event in the spring, and a lot of people think it’s a track meet, which it’s not,” Bevers said.
Those who have not joined a team still can support the teams of their friends or organizations by attending the week’s events.
Bevers said she hopes the week’s events will encourage more people to sign up for teams or start their own.
The committee will be outside of the caf all week helping people register for the event.
“It’s kind of like another big philanthropy week, kind of like what the Greek houses do,” said Claire Baer, sophomore co-chairwoman of Relay For Life.
This is Baer’s first year as a co-chairwoman for Relay For Life.
“We can get wrapped up in all the fun stuff that we’re doing, but we can’t forget why we’re Relaying,” Baer said. “For me, that’s the biggest thing because cancer runs in my family.”
Relay For Life is scheduled 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. April 4-5.
