Time management is causing confusion in the university’s chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, but officials plan to host a community event next semester.
OCU’s chapter of FCA has existed since 2004 as a student organization where athletes can unite for religious worship and support.
There are 20 to 30 FCA members on campus, ranging from freshmen to seniors in all different sports, said Skylar Montesano, exercise and sport science junior and the group’s president.
But when asked, many of those students were unsure if they were members of the group.
“I signed up at the beginning, but I’m not even sure if I’m still a member,” said Clytee Burchett, acting freshman. “I haven’t been to a meeting all year.”
Montesano, along with Travon Smith, business junior and the group’s co-president, were uncertain of events’ times and dates or membership numbers.
Montesano and Smith want FCA to work, but busy schedules are getting in the way, said Jim Abbott, athletic director and the group’s adviser.
“Any group like this is going to depend on the time they have to put into it or desire to invest in it,” Abbott said.
Voluntary hour-long meetings are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays in the Leichter Reunion Center in Henry J. Freede Wellness and Activity Center.
Abbott said the meetings are beneficial.
“If even one person is affected positively by a meeting, it is worthwhile,” Abbott said.
Being Christian is the only requirement for being a member of FCA. OCU’s chapter is open to everyone on campus.
“We don’t judge each other,” Smith said. “We try to create an environment where everyone can feel comfortable sharing their life struggles and praise.”
FCA will host an event called Fields of Faith during the spring semester. The date and location are not yet available.
The event will be a regional event, including Oklahoma City and Moore. There will be a prayer circle, a speaker, a live band, food, T-shirts, and more.
