OCU’s Young Democrats of America chapter is planning several volunteer projects this semester.
The Young Democrats of America have more than 1,500 chapters across the U.S., comprised of men and women under the age of 36.
They give members the opportunities to work with local campaigns, debate issues and network with politicians.
OCU’s chapter is assisting Donna Anderson’s campaign for Oklahoma State Schools Superintendent. They communicate the campaign’s platform to constituents through phone calls and traveling door-to-door.
“The biggest thing that we love to do is talk to our representatives, let them know what our concerns are and work closely with them,” said Taylor Brown, Young Democrats vice president and history/political science sophomore.
The Young Democrats also plan to volunteer at homeless shelters, guide educational tours at the Oklahoma History Center at 800 Nazih Zuhdi Drive, and mentor for the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma City.
OCU sociology and justice studies professor Jason Dunnington spoke about his campaign for Oklahoma State Senator at the chapter’s last meeting.
Dunnington also works as the director of business development for Shelton Investments.
Political consultant Forrest Bennett discussed internships and political careers Oct. 24.
Their meetings are at 12:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month in Room 168 in Walker Center for Arts and Sciences. The meetings last about an hour, and lunch is provided.
“Our group is very valuable because it gets kids invested in the political process,” said Spencer Welch, Young Democrats president and political science/music freshman.
The Young Democrats grew to 30 members this semester.
There are no dues for membership. The Young Democrats welcome people of all political backgrounds.
“If you’re an independent, or even if you’re a Republican, it’s something that I think is educational,” Brown said.
