- For a sweetly melancholic treat, take a look at Reflections, a five-minute animated short from Bosmat Agayoff & Alon Ziv. It’s a sad little coming-of-age story that’s told through the eyes of a man named “Barnie,” whose desire to stay young is illustrated by the childish reflection that taunts him from various reflective surfaces. The sharp 2D animation style feels both traditional and inventive, especially when paired with the classical yet slightly off-kilter score. To see the film, click here.
- Perhaps the most interesting thing about Dan Covert and Andre Andreev’s Farrah GFE is that we never get to see the subject’s face. The six-minute documentary short tells the tale of “Farrah,” a high-class escort. Covert and Andreev show us only her stark white hotel room and the back of her head, soundtracked by her cold, matter-of-fact dialogue. Though we’re allowed into her world, we’re kept at arm’s length, giving the whole thing a chillingly clinical feel. The film can be found here.
- If it’s something more fictional you’re after, check out Last Light. A haunting sci-fi film from Stephen Beres, the five-minute short focuses on the sole survivor of a biological attack that devastated an entire town. Left to his own devices in the walled-off hazard zone, the man must fight for both his life and his sanity. Beres is a master of meaningful shots, combining beautiful visuals with his actor’s simple yet powerful narration. To view the short, click here.
