Violet the Musical, one of the most acclaimed Broadway shows of the ’90s, will be presented this weekend at OCU.
The show will be at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in Burg Theater in Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center.
The show is directed by Karen Miller, associate music professor and assistant director of opera and music theater. Chuck Koslowske is the music director, with an about 20-member cast.
The show is based on a short story, The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts and Brian Crawley.
The music is by Geanine Tesori.
It is the physical and emotional story of a young woman’s journey as she travels from Spruce Pine, N.C., to Tulsa, Okla., to find a televangelist preacher who she believes can heal the scar that disfigures her face.
Rebecca Ziegler, vocal performance senior, is one of the two women playing Violet in the show.
“It is so interesting that the more I become this character, I see Violet in every human being in this world” Ziegler said.
“The physical deformity of Violet represents the inconformity within us.”
Violet is surrounded by various individuals in her journey, such as a fanatic missionary described as a “creepy guy.”
Alex Petersen, music theater sophomore, plays the creepy guy who tries to convert everyone to his own vision of faith.
“The entire time that he is on the bus he is judging people according to his own vision of life,” Petersen said. “He is selfish and is doing it for his own personal gain.”
Tickets to the show are $10 and may be purchased online at www.okcu.edu/tickets or by calling (405) 208-5227.
