Rules are being newly enforced in United Methodist Hall dormitory.
While the rules are not new, Oubon Sychareune, the dorm’s resident director, just recently began enforcing them. The rules are in place to protect the safety of the students and the campus, but some residents do not like them.
The rules include residents must check in whoever is staying with them 24 hours in advance and whoever is staying with a resident must have a bed. This will help the office keep track of who is in the building in case of emergency. Friends who are staying must pay $10. Family members are free.
Another change is the enforcement of a curfew. There is a midnight curfew for guests of the opposite sex during the week days. The curfew extends to 2 a.m. on weekends.
The rules are similar to those in place in Walker Hall women’s dormitory.
The enforcement of these rules have annoyed some residents.
“As a 21-year-old adult, I think all the rules and restrictions surrounding housing are ridiculous,” said Kaylin Westbrook, justice studies senior. “If I were renting an apartment somewhere, for half the price of what it costs to live on campus, I wouldn’t be held accountable to these kind of rules.”
Other residents, like Mackenzie Kelley, entertainment business senior, were unaware of the rules.
There are new requirements for resident assistants too. RAs formerly had to work five desk hours throughout the week, plus certain weekend hours. Each RA now is assigned a day and must stay in the building for 24 hours unless it is for an OCU-related event. An RA must be working the desk from 9 p.m. until midnight.
“It keeps us accountable,” said Sy Stewart, Methodist Hall resident assistant and marketing senior.
RAs also are required to do walkthroughs. During these walkthoughs, the RAs do not actually enter rooms, they just walk through the hallways and listen for any forbidden activity.
“People do not realize how thin these walls are,” Stewart said. “We hear everything.”
Stewart said he understands the reasoning behind the rules, but is concerned that residents are not in favor of them.
“I’m afraid that it makes some of the students not like us as much,” he said.
The new rules are posted on fliers around the resident hall and any questions can be answered by Sychareune by calling 405-208-7907.

Why did you mention Mackenzie Miller in one paragraph but not quote her? DId you delete the quote and forget to delete the set up?

At the beginning of the story you stated that “the rules are not new,” but in the last sentence you then say “the new rules.” If you are going to report facts please report them correctly, otherwise it is just the blind leading the blind.
