Most of us have experienced it, the feeling of inadequacy as we mindlessly scroll through our Facebook or Twitter feed on a Friday night watching tons of people have more fun than us.
We have also felt it perhaps in the middle of summer as we watch droves of people on vacation seemingly being the most interesting people in the world.
When we are doing these cool things, we are also posting pictures and other things on social media to remind our “friends” and “followers” just how cool we are as well.
Anyone who has social media is guilty of this at some point to some degree.
The problem in the modern age, most of us will have hundreds of Facebook friends and hundreds of Twitter followers.
The odds are that a few of those hundreds will be on vacation or doing something cooler than we are on any given day or time.
The problem happens in our mind when we start to judge our lives around the things that statistically happen within our mass of friends and followers.
You are bound to have 10 of your 500 friends on Facebook posting about some great life event that is happening to them at any given time.
We have to learn how to realize that people are just not as interesting as they make themselves out to be over social media.
Most people don’t post the boring or mundane parts of their lives on social media for the entire world to see.
You won’t see as many posts about someone staying in Friday night to watch television, as you will about someone going to a concert or going out with friends.
Social media is a great thing to our society for keeping up with friends and family who are both active in our lives and those who we have lost touch.
The danger of social media comes from our increased and sometimes unhealthy awareness of everybody’s business.
Use social media for the healthy relationships and community it can foster.
And remember, anytime that you feel like your life just simply isn’t living up to all of the glory people are posting on social media, just know that most people get up in the morning and put their pants on the same way as you, we just don’t post about things like that. It wouldn’t get a lot of likes.
