Kappa Phi has begun the school year by winning a national award and initiating 46 new members, an on-campus record.
This summer, leaders from Kappa Phi’s OCU chapter attended the National Council with members of other chapters from across the nation.
At the conference, they were awarded the Thompson Trophy, recognizing the chapter as the best Kappa Phi chapter in the nation.
The trophy was awarded in special recognition of Kappa Phi’s annual Beauty Week, the organization’s annual philanthropy event, which raises money for the Oklahoma Eating Disorder Association.
Katie Wonderly, Kappa Phi president said the innovation of the chapter is a reason for being awarded the highest honor.
“No other chapter in the country has a Beauty Week,” Wonderly said. “Last year, we raised $1,542.27 for the Oklahoma Eating Disorder Association.
“They will actually be honoring us at a banquet this fall, in recognition of our fundraising.”
In addition to the awards and honors, Kappa Phi also saw a record number of women rushing this fall. There will be 46 new members initiated into the organization. It is the largest pledge class in Kappa Phi’s history.
The new pledges will double the size of Kappa Phi’s enrollment, bringing their membership total to 96 women.
Wonderly said the record turnout is the result of more promotion and campus involvement within the organization.
“The Thompson Award is a really amazing honor, and it is also the 50th anniversary of the OKCU chapter of Kappa Phi this coming spring,” Wonderly said.
“We really wanted to get all the girls involved and let them know that this is a very exciting time to be a Kappa Phi.”
