This Friday and Saturday, OCU counseling services, housing and the alcohol committee are hosting a sober weekend.
The idea of a sober weekend is to provide students with alternatives to drinking on the weekend. Both Friday and Saturday will consist of fun events and guest speakers who will share about their personal experiences and provide workshops.
“We encourage students to say sober for at least 48 hours to find out they can still have fun without getting drunk,” said Brandi Gibson director of counseling services.
Friday’s guest speaker is Jim Riley, a former NFL player who now directs a non-profit dedicated to helping people overcome addiction. Riley was the defensive end for the Miami Dolphins and struggled with alcohol addiction himself and now tries to help others.
Also on Friday, Patrick Coleman, certified hypnotherapist, will be conducting a demonstration in Meinder’s School of Business. In addition to the demonstration Coleman will talk about how to cope with stress in a healthy manner.
voEvents will be held on Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Events will consist of yoga, basketball, speakers, sand volleyball, a carnival, a sober party, and a candlelight vigil. The schedule for the weekend can be found outside the caf.
The event is open to the public and all students can attend. All activities are free.
