Delta Alpha Chi, the men’s Christian fraternity, is scheduled to host their Homeless Awareness Week from Sept. 30 through Oct. 4.
Skyline Ministries is a United Methodist organization dedicated to helping the homeless in Oklahoma City.
All the money raised during this philanthropy week will go toward helping the group with their ministries.
“It’s great that we are finding ways to help out people who normally don’t get help,” said Kay Frazier, vocal performance freshman.
The week’s events will prominently feature the Rev. Lorenza Andrade Smith, a United Methodist minister who has been living among the homeless for the past two years.
The philanthropy week will start with Evensong service Monday night, Sept. 30 at 8:30 p.m.
Evensong is a contemporary religious service.
Smith will speak at the event.
On Tuesday, DAX will host an information night as Smith speaks and tells about her life and her journey living among the homeless.
There are no events planned on Wednesday due to Wednesday at the Wesley.
On Friday, DAX encourages groups to form teams for their annual Shack-A-Thon.
Students who want to participate can form groups of three, build a shack with cardboard provided by DAX and then spend the evening on the quad in their shack with the other teams.
The team with the best shack will win a trophy.
DAX members are planning to sleep on the quad every night of the week.
They encourage others to join them.
“It will be fun to have the whole OCU community there,” said Matt Austin, president of DAX.
According to a 2012 census by the Homeless Alliance, there are 1,303 homeless people in Oklahoma City.
This number includes both chronically homeless people, and those who are temporarily homeless due to financial issues, domestic violence and other reasons.
Students interested in participating in the Shack-A-Thon should contact Austin at mwaustin@my.okcu.edu.
