Phi Mu, the newest Panhellenic sorority on campus, gave 40 women bids during their first Bid Day hosted Friday.
Phi Mu joins Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi and Gamma Phi Beta as the university’s fourth Panhellenic sorority.
The sorority was invited to colonize on campus in April after Panhellenic went through the extension process.
Phi Mu representatives came to campus and made a formal presentation as part of the selection process.
New members expressed excitement about being part of the new organization and said they cannot wait to learn more about being the first pledge class of the Epsilon Epsilon chapter.
“I just feel really happy,” said Arden Walker, music theater sophomore. “It’s so nice.
“Everybody’s been so welcoming, and I feel like big arms are opening up.”
Lydia Walker, music theater sophomore, agreed.
“I almost cried when I opened my Bid card,” Walker said. “I’m not going to lie.”
The Great Hall in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center was covered in pink and smiles Friday as some of the new members got acquainted with each other.
“I kind of had this whole connection to it already,” Sydney Hughes, music theater freshman said.
Hughes said her mother was a member of Phi Mu at another university.
“I sent her a picture of my Bid Day card, and she sent me a picture of her pledge card and everything,” Hughes said.
The new members anticipate the opportunities open to them in Phi Mu.
“I’m looking forward to their philanthropy and just meeting new people,” said Shane Howard, psychology freshman.
The organization’s philanthropy supports the pediatric healthcare efforts of Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.
Their colors are rose and white, and the organization’s symbol is the quatrefoil, a decorative shape which resembles a four-petal flower.
The rose colored carnation is the sorority flower.
Shelby Brown, acting senior, said she is ready to make new friends in her pledge class.
“I’m looking forward to meeting a bunch of new people, because being in the theater school, you really only hang around them,” Brown said. “You’re around them in classes and stuff like that, so I’m really excited to just meet a bunch of other people from a bunch of other majors.”
Phi Mu representatives have been on campus since Stars Week, the freshman orientation week, promoting the organization
and facilitating rush activities for potenial members.
Lilly Lantigua, acting junior, said she couldn’t contain her excitement.
“I’ve been talking in a high-pitched voice for an hour,” Lantigua said. “I’m looking forward to the executive board opportunities.
“I’m ready to get to know the members of the other sororities and just further my sorority experience.”
Panhellenic and Interfraternal Council also hosted a “Chill and Grill” Event at the Cokesbury Clubhouse in honor of Phi Mu’s Bid Day.
