Student Government Association members are gearing up for another school year.
SGA President Beatrize Martinez and other members of SGA spent the summer working on plans for the academic year.
“The direction, looking forward, is definitely communication,” Martinez said. “This year we’re really making sure that we’re at events, and we let students know about these events.”
SGA created a website and started utilizing social media more to bridge communication gaps with students, she said.
“We are also internally communicating with each other so that we make sure we don’t duplicate efforts,” Martinez said.
SGA executive officers met with university deans and administrators, such as Craig Knutson, chief of staff during the summer.
“Craig Knutson really taught us why it is important to ask the questions first,” she said.
The organization is trying to be resourceful with funding, due to recent SGA budget cuts, Martinez said.
“We want to make sure we don’t waste our resources or students’ money on something if there is already a cause in place that we can collaborate with,” she said.
Martinez also has a goal to create unity between organizations and students.
SGA members are working on several events to promote unity, including tailgating parties.
“If we can pull off this first tailgating party hosted by SGA, I think that will make me really excited for the rest of the year,” Martinez said.
SGA members used new student orientation week, “Stars Week” to begin connecting with other students on campus, Martinez said.
“We participated in a lot of the Stars Week events to make sure the freshmen knew SGA is accessible and what we can provide for them,” she said.
Looking at the upcoming year, Martinez said she has a lot to look forward to.
“I’m looking forward to being tired and exhausted every day, but having everybody working together on every SGA event,” Martinez said. “What’s really promising this year is that all of the branches of SGA want to be involved, want to be seen and are actively and energetically out there letting students know that we are here.
“I think we are off to a good start and want to keep that energy, keep those channels of communication.”
