Two poles and a section of the net surrounding Jim Wade Stadium collapsed on to the baseball field today.
Wind and ice accumulation are to blame for the damage, said Ian Wolfe, assistant director of risk management.
“We’re going to have to evaluate the damage, we may have to replace all of it,” Wolfe said. “We’re going to have to let it dry out before we can see how extensive the damage is.”
In the meantime, 27th Street has been closed off between Kentucky Avenue and Florida Avenue, until at least Monday according to email sent out by Wolfe.
“This is to allow us to remove the debris and for your safety. You can detour up Kentucky or Indiana to 28thto get around,” the email reads.
Several poles and a portion of the net are still standing.
“We’re not sure about the stability of those poles,” Wolfe said. “It would probably go on to the baseball field, but we don’t want to risk it.”
Once the field dries, officials will be able to assess the damage.
“We have to wait for it to dry out, because we can’t get the equipment on to the grass, it’ll just sink down, because it is so muddy,” he said.
Baseball games are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
“We’re trying to get it cleared off before then,” Wolfe said. “It just depends on the weather.”
