The university police department officials have been ticketing parking violations this semester.
The OCUPD jurisdiction is over any property affiliated with the campus.
Tickets can be given for any parking violation, as well as expired tags and traffic violations that happen on campus.
“Parking tickets are the most common,” captain Jeff Stonebreaker said. “The law school parking lot has the most parking violations.”
Parking violations include not having a valid parking permit, double parking or parking outside of the legal parking space, and parking in a handicapped parking space.
“A fine for parking in a handicap space is about $200,” Stonebreaker said. “The OKCPD charges about $500 for that violation, so our fine seems pretty low.”
Vehicle maintenance, such as changing your oil and washing your car with a hose, also are not allowed on campus.
Fines generally range from $50 to $200, depending on the violation, Stonebreaker said.
Students have noticed the ticket increase.
“I recently got a ticket for parking in the Cokesbury parking lot on a Sunday,” said Katie Proffitt, nursing senior.
Students can only park at Cokesbury Court and University Manor if they have a valid permit for those complexes, according to the OCUPD website.
Vehicles with three or more citations can be impounded, and after five citations, drivers can lose their parking privileges.
“We’re not doing anything different, and we don’t have a quota to meet,” Stonebreaker said. “If you get caught violating any of the policies, you’re going to get a ticket.”
Students wishing to make an appeal to a parking ticket or other violation may stop by OCUPD in the Clara E. Jones Administration Building to discuss the ticket.
