This semester’s student-directed show at the School of Theater is As Bees in Honey Drown, directed by Becca Koopferstock, design and production senior.
The show, a comedy written by Douglas Carter Beane, follows “Evan Wyler,” a 20-something author who is drawn into a bizarre world when he begins to write a screenplay based on the life of a mysterious woman.
Koopferstock faced many challenges in directing the show.
She was only given a budget of $100 to cover all expenses, including costumes and props.
She also was limited to six stage formations.
To allow everyone in the audience to have the best view, Koopferstock decided on an unconventional “runway” staging.
Despite the difficulties, Koopferstock said she is excited for the show.
“I’ve had this show in my brain for a little over a year,” she said.
While Koopferstock is more interested in stage managing shows than directing them, she looks to learn from the experience.
“For me, it’s been an experiment while trying to understand the other side of theater to make me a better stage manager,” Koopferstock said.
The cast consists of six actors, four of whom play multiple roles.
Koopferstock began casting the show in November, and the cast began rehearsing in December.
Acting juniors Alex Enterline and Renee Lawrence are two of the show’s cast members.
They described the show as “cinematic, engaging and thoroughly entertaining.”
Both said that the show’s contemporary subject requires a different type of acting compared to the classical OCU curriculum.
As Bees In Honey Drown is scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Black Box Theater in the Wanda L. Bass Music Center.
Tickets are $5 and are available in the box office one hour prior to the show.
