The Student Government Association is in the process of getting the revised Student Bill of Rights approved.
The Bill of Rights details the rights of OCU students and was written by Student Government Association.
“Students should have many of the same rights as the faculty and staff,” said Robin Ladd, SGA president. “We wanted the main focus of the revision to be on the Funeral and Bereavement Leave Policy for students.”
This policy would give students the same amount of leave time as the faculty and staff, which is set at three to five days.
Several students support adding the bereavement leave policy.
“I think it is a good idea,” said Carrie Black, political science senior. “It would eliminate the stress of worrying about how missing class would affect your grades, especially if the student is from out of state or from another country.”
The bill is still a work in progress.
“We are still in the process of getting these changes solidified,” Ladd said. “It just passed by the Senate, and now we are waiting to take it to the proper administrative bodies.”
The draft of the new Student Bill of Rights was revised under the leaderhsip of former presidents John Riesenberg and Emma Velez, she said.
“I would like to see it finalized by the end of my term,” Ladd said. “But political change is very up and down, so I understand if the torch needs to be passed down to the next SGA president.”
The changes won’t be enacted until the board of trustees votes on of the recommendations.
