The spirit squads will appear in several upcoming competitions to prepare them for national contests.
The co-ed cheer team will host the NAIA South Qualifying Group Cheer/Dance Championships at 6 p.m. on Feb. 2.
The co-ed squad will compete against Texas Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist Universities.
“This competition is preparing us for nationals,” said Brandy Corcoran, cheerleading and pom coach.
The squads are looking to increase their ranking to have cheaper travel expenses.
“We practice as hard as we do so it will be more feasible for us to travel to competitions,” Corcoran said.
The squad has been preparing for this competition for more than a year.
“We knew we were going to host this event last year,” Corcoran said.
The co-ed and all-girl cheer teams, as well as the pom squad have each learned routines to compete in the upcoming competitions.
“We’ve been practicing the routine since August,” said Kayla Crawford, co-ed cheer team member.
The all-girl cheer team also will compete in the Stunt the Sport competition against Oklahoma State University and University of Central Oklahoma on Feb. 3.
“If we make the national finals in Stunt the Sport, the women’s plane tickets are paid for,” Corcoran said.
The NCA/NDA NAIA College National competition is April 10-14 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
