The American Psychiatric Association decided Dec. 1 to remove Asperger’s syndrome from the organization’s fifth revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Children and adults with Asperger’s symptoms will now be classified under the umbrella category of “autism spectrum disorders,” according to the Associated Press.
Also included in the update, “gender identify disorder” will be renamed as “gender dysphoria” in order to remove stigmas associated with gender identity being a disorder.
Dyslexia will be moved into a broader category of learning disorders and severe, frequent temper tantrums will be called disruptive mood dysregulation disorder.
