A group of students are organizing a series of events to help bring awareness about the importance of being environmentally friendly.
Dr. Adam Ryburn, biology professor, and a group of students in the sustainability and the environment class, are coordinating Sustainability Week, which is a class project for the Liberal Arts Seminar class.
There are events going on all week, including movie nights and a special menu in the cafeteria.
“Wednesday, the caf will have a “Sustainable Menu”, serving local products,” Ryburn said. “Some of the products will come from our community garden on campus.”
Alvins and the Cafeteria won’t be selling bottles of water all week in order to help reduce the amount of plastic waste.
“We are trying to get a Ban the Bottle campaign going on,” Ryburn said. “There is way too much plastic waste, and there is no sense in purchasing water when it’s free most of the time.”
Reusable water bottles will be sold at a discounted price at the campus bookstore all week as well.
The movies that are showing include “Wall-E,” at 6 p.m and “Carbon Nation,” at 8 p.m. Both movies will be shown on Thursday in the Methodist Hall Theater.
Jennifer Gooden, Sustainability Director of Oklahoma City, will also be speaking on the importance of making Oklahoma City more environmentally friendly. This will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Loeffler 102.
“I think it will help make students realize how much of an impact we have on the environment,” said Kayley Humann, environmental studies freshman. “It will help them realize that they can do small things to help make a difference.”
There will also be an information booth by the Caf for those wanting to learn more about helping the environment.
