Students will have the opportunity to sign up to walk for a cause.
A rally for the Relay For Life will be hosted from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday outside Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center.
While the actual Relay For Life is not until the spring, the Relay Rally is to inform students about the event.
There people can learn more about what Relay For Life benefits and how the event will run.
Relay For Life is an organized, overnight community walk benefiting the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life at OCU will be on April 5, 2013.
Allison Bevers, religion junior, is helping plan the event to help the community understand Relay For Life.
“We are going to have stations for every part of relay, basically explaining what it is,” Bevers said. “People tend to think it is a big track meet and it is not.”
At the event, any student who signs up gets a T-shirt. There also will be games, prizes and live music.
Hailey Blanton, education senior, is on the committee for Relay For Life, and wants students to come to Relay Rally to sign up or join a team.
“We really want people to get pumped for Relay, and get people to start fundraising,” Blanton said. “Our goal is to have everyone raise $100.”
At Relay Rally, people also will share stories about why they participate in Relay For Life.
Blanton has a personal connection to Relay For Life. Her mother lost her battle to ovarian cancer in 2007.
“I relay for my mom,” Blanton said.
Lauren Matheny, acting sophomore, also looks forward to the Relay Rally and Relay For Life.
“Having lost family members to cancer, I take every chance to fight back,” Matheny said. “We should all take a stand against cancer.”
