A new student organization will offer a chance for campus groups to come together to support university athletics.
Student Government Association leaders are working to create the Athletic-Student Coalition—a group that will coordinate relationships between university athletic teams and campus organizations, said John Willems, business finance sophomore and director of special projects for Student Government Association.
The ASC would work with athletic teams to exchange services with campus organizations, such as Greek Life, to boost attendance at games and competitions, he said.
“The problem it’s trying to solve is low attendance at sporting events and other events that happen on campus,” Willems said. “It’s supposed to help bring all student organizations together as a community.”
The coalition would be beneficial, said Marnie Hall, studio art senior.
“OCU’s organizations are pretty supportive of each other so I could see it working out pretty well,” she said.
The project is awaiting approval from Athletic Director Jim Abbott before it can move forward, Willems said. Afterward, Willems will meet with all organization heads to pitch the idea.
He hopes to establish the coalition before the end of the semester, Willems said.
