Now past two hundred and fifty million hits, the music video “Gangnam Style” is more than just a flashy video with a catchy beat.
Time reports that the song performed by South Korean pop singer Psy is a social commentary on the neighborhood of Gangnam, located in Seoul, South Korea. The article compares Gangnam to the United States’s Silicon Valley or Upper East Side of Manhattan.
The video depicts Psy in flashy clothes, strutting around “Gangnam Style,” but as the blog My Dear Korea points out, he starts out basking in a children’s park, dances in a tourist bus, shares a sauna with gang members, and meets his love interest at a subway.
“Gangnam Style” isn’t limited to one high class area, but can be taken anywhere.
