The university’s French horn section was selected this year to perform at the International Horn Society’s 44th symposium.
The symposium will be May 15-19 at the University of North Texas music school in Denton.
Leading performers, teachers, students, exhibitors, and enthusiasts from across the world will gather at the symposium to perform, network and participate in workshops, according to Student Publications archives.
Several regional workshops are offered each year in the U.S. and other countries in addition to the symposium, said Asia Marzec, horn performance graduate.
“We were really close last year when they were in Australia,” she said. “This is a great opportunity.”
Two performers will stay for the symposium’s five-day period, while seven others will be there for a few days, Marzec said.
“We will listen to lectures and have lessons during the symposium,” she said.
They also will be instructed by world-renowned horn performers, such as Andrew Clark, Gregory Hustis and Julie Landsman, Marzec said.
The section’s members faced a few financial setbacks, she said.
Student Senate awarded $450 to the horn section’s travel expenses, half of their original request.
Sen. Jonathan Clour (religion) said senators amended the bill because they had limited funding.
“We want to have some to give at the end of the year too,” he said.
The section’s members are content with Senate’s provisions, Marzec said.
The players still plan to attend the symposium, despite the setback.
