Kappa Sigma fraternity will celebrate their chapter’s 45th anniversary in April, President Ryan Schwartzman said.
“This is a pretty big year for us,” he said. “A lot of our alumni are going to come back to celebrate our fraternity and the excellence and success that we’ve had.”
Paul Derby, the chapter’s first president, will return for the event, Schwartzman said.
“It’s going to be exciting because we’re discussing plans to bring every Kappa Sigma president back for the celebration,” he said.
Matthew Mason, cell/molecular biology, said he’s excited to hear about the Kappa Sigma alumni’s post-graduation experiences.
“A lot of the guys that have graduated as Kappa Sigmas have had a big impact on their community,” he said. “I’d like to get to know them better.”
Kappa Sigma also plans to host its first philanthropic fundraiser, Schwartzman said.
“We’re the only Greek organization that doesn’t have one,” he said.
The fraternity’s members will utilize the fundraiser to donate money toward Fisher House, a program that supports America’s military members during their time of need, Schwartzman said.
The Fisher House foundation provides “comfort homes” for family members of military members, so that they may live in closer proximity, according to fisherhouse.org.
Kappa Sigma has 93 active members, Schwartzman said.
“You see a brother where you walk on campus,” he said. “I attribute that to hard work from each individual in our house.
“Everybody in our house is taking ownership and trying to make it better than it was before.”
