Alpha Phi sorority diversified their philanthropic endeavors this year.
The sorority altered its Cardiac Care Week, which the members are hosting this week to increase student interest in donating.
They are incorporating a free Zumba class, a cupcake sale featuring Gigi’s Cupcakes, and a weeklong raffle, President Kelsey Connor said. Their “King of Hearts” pageant also has additional features, such as a new opening number and an auction.
“We feel like we’ve done the same thing over and over and people get bored,” she said. “I feel great about what we’ve accomplished and we keep getting more creative.”
The women hosted a flash mob in the cafeteria Monday, during which they premiered the week’s theme “We’ve Got the Beat,” Connor said.
Tuesday was Crush Day, where students purchased Crush sodas outside of the cafeteria and had Alpha members deliver them to their campus crush, she said.
The sorority members will host a Zumba class at 7 p.m. today at Alpha Phi’s sorority house.
The women will set up a bake sale Thursday outside the cafeteria, Connor said.
“The reason why we chose to include the class is because we want people to be more active in the events,” she said.
The women will host their annual “King of Hearts” pageant at 7 p.m. Friday in Kerr-McGee Auditorium in Meinders School of Business.
“We’re trying new things so hopefully we can raise more money than we have in the past,” she said.
Alpha Phi raised more than $3,000 during last year’s Cardiac Care Week.
The sorority raised more than $2,000 in the fall from philanthropic events such as Alpha Phiesta and Picnic Basket Auction, Connor said.
Rachel Spencer, acting junior, said it’s important to make students aware of heart disease.
“It’s something we don’t really think about, especially in college,” she said.
