The women’s soccer team demolished the regional competition during their 2011 conference season.
Wins, ties and losses totaled 10-0-1 for the women in the Sooner Athletic Conference, said Brian Harvey, head soccer coach, and 17-3-2 for their overall season.
The team won the SAC tournament, which qualified them to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship.
The women’s team beat Trinity Christian College 3-2 in the tournament’s first round, he said.
“Obviously they have had a wonderful season,” Harvey said. “It’s an exciting time for the girls.”
The women then traveled to Decatur, Ala., where they lost to Lindsey Wilson College in the second round of the tournament.
Alissa Reed, sophomore goalkeeper, said she was not disappointed by the team’s performance despite the team’s 2-1 defeat.
“We played a beautiful game,” she said. “We will be a force to be reckoned with next year.”
The women ranked 23rd in the nation before the national tournament, Harvey said.
“They had a super season,” he said.
Three players from the women’s team were voted to play in the all-SAC women’s soccer team, Harvey said.
All coaches in the SAC casted a vote to decide all-SAC team participants.
Brenna Skillern, junior center back defender, made the team and was voted defensive player of the year for the SAC conference, making this the second year for her to receive this honor, he said.
Meghan McMahon, sophomore forward, Sheridan Horner, junior forward, and Blerta Rashica, sophomore right midfielder also claimed spots on the all-SAC team, Harvey said.
The men’s soccer team finished their season with an overall record of 7-6-2, he said.
The team is experiencing a new dynamic, since six starters graduated last May, Harvey said.
“This year we were a very young team,” he said. “It was a rebuilding year for us.”
They were defeated by Oklahoma Baptist University in the first round of the SAC conference, Harvey said.
The team made several mistakes throughout the season, he said.
“Hopefully they will be eradicated by the time the players are juniors and seniors,” Harvey said.
The SAC named Steven Short, senior midfielder, and Adam Black, sophomore forward, to the all-SAC team.
“Overall, it was a good year for both teams,” he said.
