An online service will deliver farm-fresh food directly to campus.
Country to Town Market is partnering with the university to give students, staff and faculty easy access to organic goods, said Valerie Robinson, human resources associate.
“I think it’s high quality produce—it’s fresh, it’s organic, and you are supporting local merchants,” she said. “It tastes good.”
Countrytotownmarket.com offers products including peaches, blueberries, apples, lettuce, spinach, potatoes, green beans, and strawberries. They also feature Texas Rio Star grapefruit and oranges.
“They either grow it or they know who they are buying it from,” Robinson said.
The response has been “light” so far, she said.
“I haven’t had any students order yet,” Robinson said. “I think it will take time to trickle down.”
Emily Meier, acting junior, said she sees a need for this type of service but does not think the majority of the student body does.
“I think people who want healthy food choices will use it,” she said. “I know I will.”
The website began September 2011 after the owners sold their produce on campus and wanted to find a way to continue the service, Robinson said. The university is the only school partnered with the company.
An OCU page is located on the website, describing how to receive orders on campus, she said. Pricing varies by pound and is competitive with market prices.
