Oklahoma Educational Television Authority will debut First & Female, a documentary about women as role models framed by the 2010 race for Oklahoma’s first female governor.
The film, directed by Tinasha Williams, graduate, and produced by Lance McDaniel, alumnus, will air 9 p.m. Dec. 1 on OETA.
“I immediately contacted Tinasha LaRayé to direct because I believed the story needed a strong, female perspective and Tinasha is one of the most eloquent, poetic, inspiring voices I have encountered,” McDaniel said. “Together, we asked our mentor Fritz Kiersch to come on board as executive producer and the rest of the team just fell in place.”
First & Female utilizes the 2010 Oklahoma race for governor to explore the increasingly influential role of women in Oklahoma’s history.
Perspectives from Wilma Mankiller, Clara Luper, Rita Aragon, Jane Jayroe, Gloria Steinem, as well as many others, including the candidates, illustrate the values of perseverance and mentorship that have altered the perception of women in leadership roles.
The film was a collaborative project, pulling together a crew led by the moving image arts department and Meinders School of Business with support from Jenks High School and Oklahoma City Community College.
First & Female won the Best Documentary Short Film award at the 2011 deadCENTER Film Festival.
It is in consideration at the Sundance Film Festival and the South by SouthWest Film and Music Festival in Austin.
