Campus officers detained a man who tried to climb a Draper Hall fire escape during Friday’s fire drill.
He was intoxicated, Sergeant Michael Kavenius said.
“We’re going to interview him to see if we can identify him,” he said. “We’ll also try to find out which room he came out of.”
Brittany Yanchick, psychology freshman, said she was shocked to hear about the detained man.
“I’m not telling this to my parents because they’d freak out,” she said. “I still feel safe.
“It’s just a reminder that we aren’t in our own little world.”
Officers conducted a campus-wide fire drill for all dormitories Friday.
Campus security is required by state law to administer a certain amount of fire drills during the night and day, Kavenius said.
“We do it to prepare the resident assistants and students for potential fires,” he said. “The fire drill was set for tonight to catch people in every day life.
“Fires don’t happen on a schedule.”
They also wanted to test the alarm system at each dormitory, Kavenius said.
“We wanted to make sure the students are aware of what the bells sound like,” he said. “We also wanted to check Methodist Hall’s fire doors.
“They’re supposed to automatically shut when the alarms go off.”
The fire alarms at Draper Hall started resonating at 11:10 p.m. Draper Hall residents didn’t evacuate the dormitory until 11:17 p.m.
“If we had the RA’s, they could go room to room to check for students and speed up the evacuation process,” Kavenius said.
Officers didn’t find a Draper Hall RA until 11:17 p.m., he said.
