The Oklahoma Regatta Festival is back for a weekend of racing and competition.
There will be activities throughout the day from Thursday to Sunday in the boathouse district of the Oklahoma River, 725 S. Lincoln Blvd. They will feature events such as rowing, kayaking and dragon boat racing.
People from all over the world attend the event, Coach Mike Knopp said.
“It’s a signature event for the river and for the city,” he said.
Some of the colleges which will face off against the OCU team include Harvard, Stanford and Miami universities.
Local universities will be present as well, Knopp said.
“We expect kayakers and rowers to do well and represent the school well,” he said. “I expect that they give major programs like Harvard a run for their money.”
The crowd is encouraged to participate in activities like zip-lining and kayaking, Knopp said.
“You are not just watching the event, you are participating,” he said. “It’s really a show.”
Snacks and meals will be served at an OCU alumni tent, said Cary Pirrong, director of alumni relations.
“The tents give the alumni a place to gather so they can reconnect,” he said.
Sophomore Rower Brock Turner said the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta is the only one in the U.S. with night races.
“It’s like the fair, but with races, a jumbo-tron and a laser light show,” he said.
