University officials announced John R. Hillis as the new vice president for university advancement and external relations.
The university conducted a national search to fill the position after Art Cotton announced his resignation in January, said Liz Hedrick, associate vice president of administrative services.
“We were looking for someone with higher education experience, and who could oversee the university philanthropy, alumni relations and fund development programs,” she said. “The position must help ensure the financial growth of the university, both in the long term and short term.”
The university received about thirty applications, Hedrick said.
“We didn’t expect to find someone with such extensive experience in Oklahoma,” she said. “His references were all over the top in praising his abilities and his connections.”
Hillis assumed the role April 18.
“John met and exceeded our expectations for the position,” Hedrick said.
Hillis previously worked for the Kansas University Endowment Association. He has also worked at The University of Oklahoma in Norman in various development positions.
Hedrick said that officials are optimistic about Hillis filling the position.
“We are very fortunate to have him based off of his experience and success,” she said. “He knows so many of the sources we are asking to be funders of the university.”
