U.K. company Advanced Plasma Power could power 60,000 homes from 50-year-old garbage, according to GOOD.
The process is called GasPlasma, in which a synthetic gas is created from the garbage, produces steam and powers a generator.
Energy expert Dr. David Fulford said not all trash can be used in the gasification process.
“Only organic and biomass waste can easily be gasified to produce the syngas,” he said. “But that doesn’t rule out re-use of another kind.
“Any metals and mineral wastes [can be] broken down into a glassy ash that can be used in the construction industry, to make concrete, cement and screed mixes.”
Other than gasification, there are more solutions to using waste, like recycling, composting and anaerobic digestion.
