After a woman from Bridgeport, CT., enrolled her 6-year-old son in a Norwalk elementary school, she was charged with stealing $15,686 for the cost of her child’s public education, according to the Stamford Advocate.
Tonya McDowell was charged with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny. McDowell’s babysitter, Ana Rebecca Marques, was evicted from her public housing apartment for providing McDowell with the documents needed to enroll her son in Brookside Elementary School.
At the time her son was enrolled, an apartment building in Bridgeport was allowing McDowell to sleep in one of their apartments at night but required her to leave during the day.
McDowell’s arrest marks the first time Norwalk Board of Education Vice Chairman Glenn Iannaccone has heard of someone facing criminal charges for sending their child to Norwalk schools.
“This is the first time I have heard something like this where there has been an arrest,” he said. “Other allegations like this have been handled by the central office.
“I’m not sure if the police have been involved.”
