OKLAHOMA CITY – OCU fell 8-1 to Columbia (Mo.) before knocking off Northwestern Oklahoma State 10-2 April 16 at Ann Lacy Stadium in the Domino’s Capital City Classic.
Nathalie Timmermans swatted her 11th home run of the year for the Stars, ranked eighth in NAIA softball. OCU went to 30-9.
Timmermans, a junior from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, homered for the second day in a row. Timmermans hammered a 2-2 pitch over the center-field wall with Lily LaVelle and Tori Joyner on to stake OCU to a 3-0 first-inning lead. Northwestern walked Timmermans three times after that. Timmermans drew a bases-loaded walk in the second, then two intentional walks.
Brittany Caruthers put OCU ahead 6-0 on a two-run base hit to right in the second. Caruthers brought in two more runs after Northwestern committed an error in the sixth.
Chelsey Eddy’s bases-full walk and eventually scored on a passed ball to put the Stars up 10-1 in the sixth.
A.J. Woodward took advantage to move to 11-4. Woodward, a junior from Menifee, Calif., struck out seven and allowed three hits in six innings. Woodward recorded two strikeouts with the bases full to finish the game.
Joyner, a sophomore from Mustang, Okla., went 3-for-3 and scored three times, while Caruthers and Timmermans each drove in four runs. LaVelle, a junior from Bridge Creek, Okla., went 1-for-1, scored three times and drew three walks.
Against Columbia, Joyner drove in OCU’s only run on a sacrifice fly. Joyner went 1-for-3 with a run driven in.
Caruthers, Magean De La Torre and Katie Proffitt added the Stars’ other hits. Proffitt, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., scored on Joyner’s sacrifice fly.
OCU takes on Friends (Kan.) in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
