Allison Gappa learned first-hand that a little determination can take her a long way, especially when it comes to landing an internship.
The broadcasting sophomore earned a sports internship at KOCO Channel 5 after going to the station and personally dropping off her application and resume.
“I knew that it took the station a long time to get back with students and I didn’t want to wait that long,” she said. “I knew that if I was going to get this internship I was going to have to show them I how eager I was to learn.”
This hunger to learn is also what Gappa realizes employers are seeking.
“Broadcasting is a competitive field and you have to be aggressive,” she said. “I’ve learned that if you are hungry to learn then people will want to help you.”
Gappa is getting a head start on her learning. Her internship for course credit didn’t officially start until this semester, but she began early last fall to gain the extra experience.
Gappa said she experiences a number of things, whether she’s at the station or out shadowing two of the sports reporters.
“Eventually I will log and edit their video,” she said. “I’ll be at Thunder Games, press conferences and OU and OSU basketball games in the spring.”
Being given this internship is one of the best experiences she could have asked for, Gappa said.
“Following the reporters around helps me see firsthand what I would be doing if I was a sports reporter,” she said. “No class actually teaches us this. Figuring these things out has come from my internship.”
Gappa said she also realizes the boost the internship will give her resume.
“It’s the best way to market myself to future employers,” she said. “It shows that I have experience and this is exactly what I need to show that I’m useful. I’ve realized I’m going to be a career woman. I know this is what I want and I know this internship is putting me on the right track.”
