Government officials are eight months away from the promised final day of American presence in Iraq, according to the Huffington Post.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates visited the country this past week to meet with the top U.S. commander in Iraq.
The two discussed a variety of possibilities, including an extended stay for a couple years or even remaining in Iraq permanently, Gates said.
“It just depends on what the Iraqis want and what we’re able to provide and afford,” he said Thursday at a U.S. base in the northern city of Mosul.
