Inauguration planners are providing students, staff and faculty with the unique chance to hear speakers from a range of backgrounds.
The symposia will be divided into two sessions on the same day of the presidential inauguration.
Lunch will be served at noon April 6 in the Meinders School of Business. Following the lunch, the first session will be 1 p.m. and cover three topics: “Philanthropy: What it is and Where it is,” “The Rainy Day Fund is Busted: How Long is the Drought?,” and “Law and the Campus.” The second session will be 2:30 p.m. and include these three topics: “The New Drill: Oil, Gas and CNG in the Century,” “Law and Pretty Much Everything…,” and “To Your Health.”
One of the reasons officials created the symposia was to provide a learning experience for students that would be missing class Wednesday, said Elizabeth Newton, inauguration manager.
“The symposia is set up to have a variety of speakers to come speak so that the campus community can learn from experts in these industries,” she said. “Since classes are canceled, we feel like it will be a really great opportunity to hear from industry experts.”
The symposia will provide a diverse lineup of prominent speakers, Newton said.
“The ‘New Drill’ panel will feature John Richels, the president and CEO of Devon,” she said. “We are going to have a professor of neurology from Harvard, and then we have the senior council to the attorney general.
“One of the speakers for the ‘Philanthropy’ panel is Kim Henry, who is Brad Henry’s wife. It’ll be interesting to have the former first lady.”
Amanda Lee, entertainment business junior, said she hopes to be able to attend the event despite the busyness of this time of year.
“I think it’s going to be a really great opportunity to hear really good speakers that students wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to,” she said.
To attend, students must RSVP by April 1. For more information, contact Elizabeth Newton at inauguration@okcu.edu or call 405-208-7000.
