Doctors who perform abortions in Oklahoma after 20 weeks of pregnancy could face felony charges under a bill overwhelming approved by a Senate committee, according to the Associated Press.
The Senate Health and Human Services Committee voted 6-1 for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, a measure based on the idea that a fetus can experience pain after 20 weeks. The bill now heads to the full Senate.
A spokesman for Oklahoma’s new Republican Gov. Mary Fallin said the governor has not indicated specifically if she would sign the bill, but Fallin consistently touted her anti-abortion record on the campaign trail. The measure passed the House on a 94-2 vote.
