Student Government Association plans to gather student opinions at OCU Speaks.
Student Senate will host the event April 7 outside the cafeteria. OCU Speaks is different from the Mini Speaks, said Sen. Jon Davis, (law/ graduate-at-large).
“Mini Speaks is a smaller event that allows students to voice their opinion only on a few topics,” he said. “OCU Speaks does not limit the topics to a specific area.”
During OCU Speaks, senators encourage students to discuss their complaints and opinions of the university, Davis said.
“We want to find out what’s important to them,” he said.
It is a time when senators can provide information to the student body, gather public opinions and then take that information to change policies, Davis said.
“If we are able to take feedback from the student body and use it well, then that’s a good representation of a strong student government,” he said.
The event will take place after SGA elections, which are March 29-30.
“It will give the new senators an idea of what Senate is all about,” he said. “They will be able to familiarize themselves with the process and also hear what students have to say.
“Overall, I think we will gain a better SGA and improve our executive and Senate functions.”
The event was scheduled for March 24, but other events conflicted with that day, Davis said.
“All senators will be required to attend the event,” he said.
Jacob Clewell, instrumental performance freshman, said he thinks OCU Speaks has potential.
“I like that they would take my opinion into account,” he said. “It is nice to think that they might change something if I didn’t like it.”
