Students planning to attend the annual Big Event can expect something new this year.
Big Event will be from 2 to 8 p.m. April 23 at Frontier City, 11501 N. I 35 Service Road, Oklahoma City.
Student Activities Council and Student Government Association have collaborated to change the usual Big Event activities. Last year students could choose to see a Red Hawks baseball game or get a free movie pass to Harkins and a $10 food coupon for restaurants in Bricktown.
SAC and SGA thought students were ready for a change when it came to Big Event, said Jessi Pingel, chief commissioner of student activities.
“This year, we believe we have done that,” she said. “We did a lot of research for the logistics of the entire event to give the students the best benefit for the money.”
The voucher that students will receive when they come to the park is a $55 value, Pingel said.
“This includes parking, an all-you-can-eat BBQ- themed dinner from 4-7 p.m., admission, and access to all the rides,” she said.
The reason for these changes was prompted by several factors. This year, students will have the flexibility to come and go during the event. Students’ tickets will be reusable throughout the entire day, Pingel said.
“I think it’s going to be fun and it’s a good date for students,” she said. “Because this is such a long period of time, it adds flexibility for students as far as being able to enjoy themselves and work the event into their schedules.”
Eric Waltman, film production sophomore, said having Big Event on Saturday is “genius.”
“I think it will be easier to make a full day out of Frontier City than walking around Bricktown trying to figure out what to do with yourself,” he said. “During the weekend we have less to worry about and students will have more time to go out.”
