Judges named Victoria Korrect, political science sophomore, Miss Indian OCU 2011 on March 5.
The event was hosted by the Native American Society and hosted in Petree Auditorium in Wanda L. Bass Music Center.
Three contestants each wrote an essay and completed an interview with judges prior to the event. The interview was on their cultural knowledge and campus involvement.
The pageant had three parts: traditional greeting and dress, talent and on-stage question.
Corey Belvin, psychology sophomore, was awarded the Academic Acheivement award for having a GPA of 3.762.
Rachel Johnson, psychology/art sophomore, was awarded Miss Congeniality.
Korrect is a member of the Comanche tribe. Her talent was a chalk drawing to the song “Crazy Horse,” by John Trudell.
Her platform is to improve high school retention rates in the Native American community. She plans to do this through mentorship in Putnam City and Oklahoma City schools.
“The three things that cause this are lack of teacher engagement, not enough parent involvement and the economy,” Korrect said.
Korrect said she will work on her platform with the help of the OCU community.
“Native American Society would be the mentors, and this would connect our community with the native community,” she said.
Korrect also received the people’s choice award.
