Wind and percussion students will be featured in the upcoming orchestral performance, the Wind Philharmonic.
The event will be at 8 p.m. Sunday in Petree Recital Hall in Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
The performance will open with Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide,” and close with works by Vincent Persichetti.
Other composers will include Ron Nelson, Percy Grainger and Ottorino Respighi, said Dr. Matthew Mailman, director of conducting.
“This is the third Wind Philharmonic concert this season, and there’s a lot of exciting music involved,” he said.
Josh Attaway, music business junior, said this is his third year to play the trombone in the concert series.
“We’ll be playing music from several different composers,” he said. “It’s an ensemble concert featuring a lot of the instrumental musicians.”
Instrumental students must audition for placement four times per year, Mailman said.
“This event will involve most of the wind and percussion students,” he said.
Presenting the music is a communal effort for the students, Attaway said.
“It’s a lot of fun to get to play with an ensemble like that where everyone really cares about the music and each other,” he said.
The students are passionate about the performance, Attaway said.
“Making music as an ensemble is so much more special and has so much more meaning behind it,” he said. “It’s an outstanding group to do that with.
“We have a great concert lined up, and we’re really excited about it.”
