OKLAHOMA CITY – Coleson Rakestraw’s 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left brought John Brown (Ark.) a 67-66 win over Oklahoma City University on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Rakestraw answered Brandon Moton’s trey with 27 seconds remaining that put OCU up 65-64. Orlan Jackman made it 66-64 with a free throw at the 10-seconds mark before Rakestraw’s 3.
Moton, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, spearheaded OCU with 19 points and five assists. Dee Proby, a senior from Round Rock, Texas, became the Stars’ other double-digit scorer with 13 points. Jackman and Shane Rogers each added eight points for OCU.
“I’m very disappointed,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. “We had no one on their best shooter at the end of the game.”
OCU hit only 12 of its 27 free-throw attempts.
“Games are won or lost at the free-throw line,” Morrissey said. “We should have won the game. We have to bounce back from this loss.”
E.J. McWoods provided John Brown a 61-56 lead at 4:59 showing on the clock. Proby cut OCU’s deficit to 63-62 at 40 seconds left, then Adrian Miller had a free throw to put John Brown ahead 64-62.
Johnny Stephene supplied OCU with its largest lead of the game at 21-14 with a 3-point play at 10:23 left in the first half.
The Stars sank 60 percent of their shots from the field in the first half, but their shooting percentage dipped to 45.5 percent in the second. OCU finished shooting 53.2 percent from the floor.
Rakestraw led John Brown with 15 points. Andrius Mikutis chipped in 13 points and 12 rebounds for John Brown, while Ryland Allen and Adrian Miller each had 10 points.
John Brown managed 42.3 percent shooting from the floor. John Brown nailed seven 3-pointers.
The Stars meet St. Gregory’s at 8 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
