Filipe Nieto was awarded first prize in the Carl Albert High School Band New Music Competition. As the winning composer, Nieto will work with the Midwest City-based band and its director, OCU alumna Sarah Neely, to create a work to be premiered in the spring. Nieto, a junior composition major, is from Bogota, Colombia.
The Project 21: Music for the Twenty First Century concert featured nine OCU-created world premieres. Bass School musicians performed works by student composers Michael Corson, Davis Good, T. Nathan Mickle, Nathan Reed, Jamie Whitmarsh, Andrew Williams, Filipe Nieto, Nick Poss and Ryan Nossaman.
Trumpeter Carol Jumper and clarinetist Abby Lloyd were chosen as first chairs in the 2011 OMEA Intercollegiate Band.
The OCU Trumpet Ensemble was selected through recorded audition to advance to the semifinals of the 2011 National Trumpet Competition. Bob Luther, Carol Jumper, Patrick Doyle, Tim James and Cotey Bowman will compete against ensembles from other leading music schools in the country at George Mason University in March.
Composition majors Max Randa and Joseph Belle had their works selected for recording by the OCU Symphony Orchestra under Benjamin Nilles.
The Oklahoma gubernatorial inauguration featured instrumental majors Abby Lloyd, Brandon McMillian and Carley Flowers performing as part of the Governor’s Own 145th Oklahoma Army National Guard Band. A reception at the Cowboy Hall of Fame featured a jazz trio comprised of Bass students Patrick Womack, Brian Anderson and Hamilton Pyburn.
Jamie Whitmarsh, a senior double major in composition and percussion, earned third place in the Colorado-based T. Gordon Parks Memorial Collegiate Concerto Competition, sponsored by the Arapahoe Philharmonic. This year’s competition featured woodwinds, brass and percussion performers from across the nation.
Singers Jeffrey Gates won the Tulsa District Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions and Robert Watson won the Kansas City District. They advanced to the Jan. 30 regionals.
