PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University returned to its winning ways and walloped the Wayland Baptist (Texas) Flying Queens 97-61 at the Hutcherson Center.
The Stars, ranked second in NAIA Division I women’s basketball, moved to 18-1, 13-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. OCU had four in double-digit scoring with senior Donica Cosby netting 19 points and hustling for four steals.
Lauren Gober, a sophomore from Newcastle, Okla., went for 14 points and five rebounds for OCU. Senior Breezy Martin posted 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Starr Fairbanks added 12 points and six rebounds for the Stars. OCU’s Desiree Jeffries, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, added a game-high seven assists. All 12 women put in at least one field goal in the contest.
OCU jumped to an early 13-7 lead after Cosby, a senior from Coldwater, Miss., drained a 3-pointer at the 14:32 mark. The Stars could never get the lead past the six-point margin and even relinquished their advantage midway through the first half. A pair of free throws by Alex Williams tied the game at 18-18 and a Toia Wiltz jumper put the Flying Queens in the lead with 8:33 remaining in the first half.
An Emily Davis jump shot followed by a K.J. Johnson free throw quelled the short-lived Wayland Baptist advantage. After OCU found its way back in front, they never looked back. The Stars ended the first half on a 12-4 tear to lead 41-31 at the midpoint break.
OCU began the second half of play with a 22-2 run to put the game at 63-33 with 12:50 to play. The Stars forced 10 Wayland Baptist turnovers during the seven minute stretch to put the game out of reach for the Flying Queens. The Stars offense has scored over 90 points in nine games thus far. This is the third-highest scoring output of the season for OCU.
The Stars capitalized on Wayland Baptist mistakes by scoring 43 points off 31 forced turnovers. OCU won the battle of the boards 44-30 and put in 46.3 percent of their field goal attempts.
OCU returns home to host Northwestern on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Abe Lemons Arena.
