Two changes have been made to the Free Movie Night events this semester, according to Jessi Pingel, chief commissioner of Student Activities Council, at last week’s Student Senate meeting.
The event has been moved back to Thursday nights instead of Wednesday, said Leah Diaz, vice president of Student Activities Council. The first Free Movie Night will be hosted tonight at Harkins Bricktown 16.
“Last semester, we held the event on Wednesday nights due to premiere conflicts with Harkins,” she said. “But there will be no premiere conflicts this semester.”
Harkins is not the only reason that the event was moved to Thursday nights, though, Diaz said.
“It’s to give students the opportunity who couldn’t go last semester on Wednesday nights.”
Free Movie Night was moved from Thursday to Wednesday nights last semester due to athletic conflicts, according to Student Publications archives.
“Thursdays often conflict with athletic events, and we didn’t want to discourage people from going to the games,” said Kirsten Gannon, SGA secretary of marketing/communications in the Sept. 29 issue of The Campus.
Jim Abbott, athletic director said last semester SGA officials spoke with him about moving Free Movie Night due to help with athletic attendance.
“I am a little disappointed that the event is hosted on a night when we have home basketball games,” he said. “But I understand that Free Movie Night is a big event on this campus.
“There could be a potential conflict on any night.”
Another change that student leaders made to the event is that there will only be three Free Movie Nights this semester, Diaz said.
“We’ll only have one for each month of January, February, and March,” she said. “April has always been the Big Event.”
The amount of tickets purchased for the events did not change this semester, Diaz said.
“We always make sure to have one thousand tickets,” she said. “And whatever isn’t used will roll over to the next time, so that we always have one thousand available.”
Some students are displeased about the changes, said Georgeanne Yehling, vocal performance sophomore.
“I’m not happy about it,” she said. “But I would rather have three well-attended movie nights instead of six movie nights with low attendance.
“Though I think Big Event is a worthy cause to lose one movie night.”
