A California citizen filed suit against Taco Bell Coporation on behalf of herself and the general public.
Amanda Obney and her lawyers are demanding a trial to challenge the representation to consumers that the company’s items contain “seasoned ground beef” or “seasoned beef,” the lawsuit, which was filed on Jan. 19, states.
“Rather than beef, these food items are made with an item actually known as ‘taco meat filling,'” according to the lawsuit. “Taco meat filling consists mostly of extenders or other non-meat substances.
“Taco meat filling is not beef. In fact, it does not meet the minimum standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture to be labeled or advertised as ‘beef,’ seasoned or otherwise.”
The USDA defines beef as cow flesh, while the document lists water, “Isolated Oat Product,” wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent, autolyzed yeast extract, modified corn starch and sodium phosphate as ingredients in the taco filling.
