Student Senators approved funding to two organizations Tuesday and passed their second resolution of the semester.
Senate Bill 027 passes
The bill allotted funding to OCU Sailing Club. The legislation, coauthored by Sen. Lena Khader (humanities) and Sen. Matt Mahon (athletic), will fund $1,000 to cover van rental and motel expenses for club members to compete in the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl Regatta.
Sailing club members will compete in the regatta with 14 other U.S. teams from Dec. 30-31. Club members will rent a university van for a commute for four days at $100 per day. Two hotel rooms for three nights at $79 per night also will be paid for by the funding. An additional $126 also was funded miscellaneously to the group.
OCU Sailing Club does not receive funding from the athletic department. The coach and other team members used about $1,600 of their own money this semester to cover expenses. Sailing club members sleep on the floors of churches rather than in hotels during regattas due to this lack of funding, said Sen. Khader.
Senate Resolution 002 passes
The resolution, titled “OCU against bullying,” calls for the university community to “recognize the signs of and unite against any bullying behavior.” It encourages students, faculty and staff to report any instances of bullying to OCUPD. See detailed article about the resolution.
Senate Bill 028 passes
The bill allotted $2,150 to Oklahoma Wizards League (OWL) for the organization’s annual Hogwarts Hoot-enanny: A Wizard Rock Charity Ball. Student Senate had about $1,000 left in rolling appropriations for the semester when the bill, written by Sen. Andrew Long (senior-at-large), was funded.
The event, to be hosted for its third time on campus, will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 5 in the Great Hall in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Harry Potter Alliance, a “nonprofit organization that uses the massive Harry Potter fan base to raise awareness of social and political causes and gets people active in the changing world. “
