The Thanksgiving holiday allows a time for most students to be with their family, enjoy a break from school and a turkey feast.
Nathaniel Williams, kinesiology junior, is one of these students.
Williams will travel home to St. Louis, Missouri where he plans to be with his family, see his grandparents and hang out with hometown friends.
“My favorite thing about this holiday is waking up and smelling my mom’s turkey and dressing,” he said. “I love going outside and seeing the leaves on the trees change color and watching football games.
“It’s like a relaxation away from school.”
Thanksgiving will be here in the city for other students.
Cody Ruize, business administration senior, is working with his pastor to host a Thanksgiving dinner for all students who aren’t able to make it home for the holiday.
The dinner will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 25 at Souls of Light International Church, 2712 NW 23rd St.
The dinner will be a non-religious gathering, with a gourmet dinner, desserts and live entertainment.
Ruize said he came up with the idea after brainstorming with his youth group on ways to reach out to the community.
“This dinner provides a way for students to come together and enjoy a better meal if they were stuck in their dorms and share fellowship with each other,” he said. “This is second year for the dinner, and we’re planning for it to be annual.”
About 50 people attended last year, but this year the church has planned on food for 250 to 300 people, Ruize said.
“We aren’t only targeting students at OCU,” he said. “This dinner is serving other schools like UCO, OCCC, OU.”
Students interested in performing or with questions can contact Ruize at 405-606-1918, or cruise.stu@my.okcu.edu. missing a period.
University Closings:
The university closed a day early for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Sophia Snider, data systems and reporting specialist, said the university will be closed Nov. 24 to 26.
“As far as I can remember the university has always not held classes on Wednesday to allow students travel time,” she said. “This year the university will be closed for all staff and faculty in place of the Fourth of July holiday that falls on a weekend.”
Snider said she likes the changes and looks forward to getting her cooking done and having time for travel.
